Establishment of the Israeli army

The Israeli Army, also known as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was established on May 31, 1948, just two weeks after Israel declared independence.

A key element of the IDF’s military doctrine is that Israel cannot lose a single war.

IDF structure

The IDF consists of three branches: the Israeli Army, the Israeli Air Force and the Israeli Navy.

The head of the IDF is the Israeli Chief of General Staff (the current holder of this position is Herzi Halevi).

The commanders of the army and air force as well as the navy will report to the chief of staff, as well as regional commanders and the heads of various defense leadership, including the Intelligence Corps.
